3. The host link page is too generic (not about your page (site) that it's pointing at).  The ideal host page linking to you should have some relevance to your page (site).  

4. However, the search engine spiders want to compare things like, title, text, paragraph and linking anchor text. It's usually impossible to achieve enough relevance from the host link page. 

5. Link pages, even if they do get indexed, and then get traffic, there are usually so many links, you get very few if any visitors, the ideal situation is if there are only a few website destinations off the page, you get way more quality traffic - Thus the article exchange.
